The game features beast like waifu also known as kemono girls who will help you save your sister from a mysterious event. Your an “Awakener” who has the last hope of leading humanity. A classic story of an apocalyptic world where your the only saviour surrounded by waifu including some obvious fanservice.
Starting with an anime intro that sums up the main story where your greet by some fanservice right at the start. The game locks you in the tutorial mode for a long time. A practice that i’m not fond because it takes away all your freedom from exploring the game by yourself.
Combat is a turn base rpg where your character are chibi version of the original expression. You have 6 slot available for your waifus, 3 frontline and 3 backline. Despite those position where normally frontline would be hit first and then will be the backline. It doesn’t really matter as in Echocalypse each unit hits differently.
So try to read the description of skill of your units before building an SSR team that hits only frontline units. Tierlist will mislead you into obtaining specific units that are near good or bad as SR units without any awakening. Yes you will dupes and a lot of them including fragment.
This is part of the game where i feel the game is p2w . As you will be limited on the amount of currency once the beginner events are over. Also rates of summoning are not the best, don’t expect to pull 1 SSR in every 10 pull unless your very lucky. But that doesn’t mean you will be able to obtain the same SSR units.
As f2p best to focus with the starter units given to you by game, a mix of SR units with MC and 1 SSR unit. Easier to awaken and cheaper to upgrade than having a bunch of SSR units that will be stucks on zero star for a very long time. Talking about upgrades, Echocalypse has multiple way to power up a units.
You can level up, awaken and upgrade units after you reach a certain level. Plus you can equip them with badge(4 of them more exactly), extra gear and exclusive weapon which can also be upgraded in various way. Although things starting to getting confusing, the game manage to keep things clear with a good interface and explanation.
Each resources has it’s specific stage which make grinding quite easy. But some stage have limited chance per day and some require energy(stamina). Yes sadly Echocalypse is an energy base game with a static pool of energy which generate at an okay rate. Luckily the game gives you energy refill daily to let you grind a bit more.
Echocalypse has a large amount of daily quests which seems to get longer each time you unlock new modes. I honestly skip some of them because after some time, i feel annoyed just to do the quests. Reasons are that combat that can’t be skipped is boring to watch.
Some modes are only available at a limited time which i successfully miss nearly every day. If your stuck on stage time to grind stages for some days to break through. This gets boring very quickly as you literally don’t feel progressing at all, only thing that is changing is the enemy units compositions.
Late game, Echocalypse has not only a long list of daily quests but has also an affection system like Azurlane. Let’s say it covers the basic of giving gifts to obtain information and voice lines. The dormitory is an inferior version of Azurlane with little interaction of the chibi waifu in their room.
Overall i feel Echocalypse covers the basics in terms of gameplay, illustrations, affection system but does not exceed other big existing title like Azurlane or Epic 7. Don’t worry the Fanservice level is on par with them so you won’t be disappointed. Even the normal illustrations are very good despite skins are being exclusively for cash player.
Yes it’s worth playing, not the best gacha collection rpg i’ve played so far but Echocalypse has it’s own charms. Good illustrations, okay gameplay and it’s long list of daily quests. Although the game feels very p2w, i can say i didn’t meet any paywall during my play through. You can easily manage with the units given to you unless you want to be competitive in PVP.
Judging that some SSR character have no animation and that some modes with non skippable fights, Echocalyspe seems like a rush game with content added here and there to make the game look awesome. Yes, the game is very free to play friendly as they reward you with quite a lot of SSR units early on. You don’t have any paywall but need to grind a lot and you will need to focus only on a team at a time.

A mysterious unworldly event altered your phone and became a portal into the Leap universe, establishing a connection between you and alien waifus.
After a nice 3D intro, you start with some dialog between you and some alien waifus known as Leapers. The start of the tutorial which guide you through all the basics of the game, you may notice that the game has 2 different phase.
The first phase consist of the exploration part where you move the leapers to engage in dialogues or start a fight like in Pokemon. Only thing different here, is that you won’t encounter any monster randomly. As for the second phase, you’ve guess it already, it’s combat itself. Combat itself will have it’s Pre fight where you will need to place a certain amount of Leaper on a 8×6 board.
You may have a certain limit of how much Leaper, you can deploy on the board and sometime some other restrictions depending on the stage. Also you can only place them on one side of the board(left side normally). Once fully prepared and having the right positioning for example tank in front and mage in the back. You can start the fight where the leapers will start moving and fight automatically.
Note at the bottom of your screen, you will notice the avatar of your leaper that will glow after the energy bar is full. During that phase, you can use the ultimate of the Leaper or choose to put auto mode on or off for each leaper on the field. Another important thing is synergy and bonuses between units for example using 3 units of the same faction will give you a bonus or using 3 units of the same type also grants you a bonus in stats.
Another important factor of the game is the idle part of the game, you can start obtaining your resources once you finish first chapter. This is one of the only game that have a 24 hour collect limit which i appreciate a lot. This means your not a slave to the game where you need to connect every 8 or 12 hours daily. The deeper you mine, the better the rewards gets. You can survey the information to collect your reward, hasten a quick survey for 2 hours of idle collect.
Space Leaper Cocoon has a very unique system, leveling is basically the same as other idle game where you pump resources into a unit until you reach a level cap. Once the level cap is reached, you will need to limit break your unit to reach the next level cap. This game only have 5 star max and a max level of level 150 but this is only the first step of upgrading a unit. After you manage to 5 star your unit with fragment that you manage to collect, you can start working on upgrading the Phase which will have 3 level. Phase will need different resources and fragment to upgrade, so i consider it a late game upgrade.
Let’s not forget about Micro Chain where you get bonuses for upgrading other units that are link to this Leaper. It’s a bit like a friend system where you unlock more things for your main units while upgrading the other Leapers and completing your collection. Lastly is the affection system which you will need to work on it, you will need to offer lot’s of gift and take that unit to the Journey Center a lot to create a solid bond.
Skill is very straight forward, you will just need to upgrade the grade of your Leaper to obtain higher level skill. Only skill that you will need to upgrade separately is the Character Gear which acts like a unique weapon. Luckily no need to farm or pull for it in a Gacha, but you will need to farm Iridescent Array for resources to upgrade it. It will change grade with level and will unlock new effect for the units but you may need to level up your unit to a certain grade for that.
Thankfully Leaper needs only 3 gear for 3 different type of class namely Tank, Mage and Fighter. Your gear can be level up but the level cap will depends on the quality of the gear namely common, qualified, standard, advanced, refined and legendary. Legendary will have secondary stats lines compared to the common gear and also the level cap will be different. Your primary gear attributes will always stay the same but your secondary gear attributes will be randomly unlock at each level cap.
As usual to avoid a never ending article and in order to avoid you too many spoiler for you. So that you can play the game with some knowledge, here’s a list of other modes and important things that you will see in the game. This is only a brief description of modes but the combat will remain the same, only the stage and rules that may change.
Space Leaper Cocoon has taken the retro pixel art path in terms of graphics. From live 2D models to classic rpg miniature characters as the first final fantasy game. The character of the game are rather unique as they are a mixture of animal, robot and waifu. Resulting into a mix which you have never seen in any other game. The battle goes on in a grid base battle field and the animation of ultimate has nothing special.
Controls is not Space leapers cocoon fort, the game give you control only before battle. The rest of the control are left to the AI during the whole battle. Only thing you could do, is to tap the ultimate skill button if you didn’t activate the auto play.
If you happened to like retro music, you will absolutely love the music theme of Space Leaper Cocoon. A very nice retro background music for a modern game is very rare, music does go on loop but you’ll never get tired listening to it. Each Leaper have it’s own voice actor with multiple lines which are unique, for example some may have a voice like talking underwater or using auto tune. Sound effect are also very well done, overall i give full mark on the work on the team who worked on the music and sound effects.
The daily routine of this game takes around 15 min to complete. Whereas the game play itself make take some hours specially if your pushing your progress in the campaign. The game has different mode to keep you busy so you can easily choose the number of time your going to spend as there’s no pressure to keep up with other player.
I would say the game is very F2P friendly as how easily you can obtain resources to summon. You don’t need natural 3 star units to finish the game as the revolves more on team composition. You can easily buy fragments of units in the shop which refresh weekly. Making the process to max a unit easier as you won’t really need to summon to progress further. All content are available to play and no paywall.
I would not really call it P2W as the only advantage you will get is additional resources including summons. But remember that obtaining units are random so even with a thousand summons won’t guarantee you to max a unit right away. Beside PVP i can’t find any P2W elements you can get.

The shop offer the basic service as all gacha games that is daily, weekly, monthly, promotional, summon, currency, subscription and gems packages. Price will vary between $0.99 to $99.99 but be careful when buying multiple package as it may cost you more than that.
Considering Space Leaper Cocoon is an idle game, we could imagine that the game would have a very long life span. Specially if they are going to introduce new heroes and events to keep the old player busy collecting Leaper. But I’m worried about this game future, although the game is an excellent idle game with all kind of unique modes and characters. The main problem is there’s no endgame content after completing the campaign. This is a gaping hole that will make the game lose a lot of it’s player base overtime including me. So i would not be surprise the game would close there server in 1 year as they may have a low player base.
As all idle game, time and resource management is key of getting a good progression. This will avoid you being stuck on a stage for days. This game is very beginner friendly in terms of management of resources, free reset on units until a certain level, easy upgrade system and easy gear system. Learn different strategy with different type of units and various team composition plus the units positioning.
New events and new leapers are coming out nearly every month.
Yes, Space Leaper Cocoon is a good idle game with balanced amount of contents to keep busy enough and also a game that doesn’t consume too much of your precious time. The game is very unique idle game that we could easily compare to the other copy paste idle game with a different skin. Once you complete the campaign there’s not much to do beside raising your leapers to max and grinding everyday stage in a repeated way. This is where i see a big flaw in this game, no real endgame content beside collecting leaper and raising them to unlock different illustration. But overall it’s an excellent idle game that i would highly recommend you to play and i hope they would add new features for endgame. After a simple tutorial which will explain you the basic of fighting monsters. You will immediately jump into the story, the game transition between narration and combat stages. The combat consist of placing your heroes on a grid which has 12 space. You will also notice that you have limited amount of memory. Memory is the limit of how many unit you can place on the grid. Units will have different cost depending on there rarity.
Once you finish placing your units. You can start the wave, your units will move and attack the enemy depending on their class. Once you’ve finish all the enemy in wave 1, you will be given more memory so that you can place another unit or replace your current team with another. Note that your squad can only have 10 heroes at a time, so to be careful and balance your team with a mix of every class.
The process will be repeated again until you’ve cleared all the waves. In Story mode, once you cleared the main boss on the map, you will unlock the challenge mode. Those challenge are similar to the normal mode but have harder condition. For example, you lost 1% of your HP every seconds or the enemy have a shield, etc. You will need to clear a stage on normal first to be able to do the challenge mode.
In this game heroes are the units that you summon with memories, those heroes have different stars and classes that differentiate them from each other. They also have an element which represent their strength and weakness. All units can equip gear and can awaken to level 70 if you have copies of that unit. Meaning all units are important in this game, the way of game play will largely depend on your play style and the heroes that you manage to obtain in your summon.

As mentioned above they will also have different element. So you will have the 5 elements, Light and Dark oppose each other. The other 3 elements are Fire, Water and Nature. Where Fire counter Nature, Nature counter Water and Water counter Fire.
Equipment is also important as they have stats that will help your hero perform better in combat. You only have 4 part of gear in Grimlight, the weapon, armor and 2 slot for accessories. They also come in different rarity from uncommon grey to golden legendary gear. The rarity are as follows, uncommon, rare, unique and legendary. Weird that they did not add a common gear which is normally the green one.
Gear can be upgraded in 2 different ways. First is level up which consist of feeding the gear with other gear to level up the gear to a higher level. Second is the refine, where you will need an exact copy of that gear to make the gear+1. You can refine a gear up to 5 times and you can limit break your gear to reach the next 10 level. Note that gear will have different set that give a specific bonus when you use them.
Decide what gear that you will need depending on what type of unit your going to use. For example don’t put stats like critical chance on your tank, instead try to put def% or Hp% as stats. Don’t forget to read what stats the units will be using before upgrading any gear. Resources are limited so don’t upgrade and maxed a rare gear, focus on unique and legendary if possible. As you will be using them during the whole game.
As usual, here’s a brief description of thing that you will see in the game, that are important.
The game is entirely in 2D graphic, character are animated and background are static. The illustration of characters are very well drawn and it is one of the reason many people was attracted to this game. Each character looks cool and are unique to represent their fairy tale original in the classic story. The trailer was also breathtaking and this is why the game was having some hype. But sadly, it was another game that miniature everything during combat to a chibi version of the characters.
Yes, they do look cute but why change the art style to this? The adventurer’s guild also have the character in chibi version, they mindlessly walk in the room and can’t interact with any object. I didn’t find any purpose of putting character in the room as they don’t have an affection system. Anyway, in combat skill animation is meh! They don’t look great, so don’t expect anything spectacular as in other games.
The control are rather simple, you select a unit and place them on the 12 grid before combat. When combat start you will only need to tap the skill of the heroes when it’s ready and that’s about it. Repeat the same thing to complete the other waves. You can replace a unit during between the waves or change it’s position providing you have enough memory to use that unit. You heroes will automatically attack the enemies depending on their respective roles.
It’s a nice instrumental music that you will hear for each section of the game. Each character does have multiple voice acting line and they do have a specific line when using their skills. They also have part of each chapter narrated in voice acting. However all the line are in Korean language and cannot be changed, so you will have to rely on the translation to understand unless you can understand Korean.
Dailies takes only 5 min to complete and your out of the game. Seriously? Yes, as most of the time after completing the daily you will run out of stamina. How about the story? Well at the start of the game you will given a large amount of free stamina and will also level up your account quickly which will give you a free stamina refill. As combat only last 1 or 2 min, most of the time you will be reading the story between each stage. Of course you can skip and comeback later to read it. The game is rather short, you can complete it within 1 week or less if you have the stamina to grind the dungeons for resources.
Although a good amount of freebies will be given to you early game, you will earn less and less in-game currency once you finish to clear the story. So you won’t be able to summon new units or get dupes easily later on. Stamina will be a real issue once you reach around Chapter 4 where you will need to start grinding resources to upgrade your units and equipment. Your account progression will slow down considerably.
Yes, Grimlight is P2W. The games encourage you to spend as it starve you with resources and stamina. There are limit way to obtain in-game currency which you need to summon. Summoning is a must as you will need copy of a unit to awaken the unit. Cash player will be able to buy skins, battle pass and many advantageous package compare to a F2P. Which means a much smoother account progression.

The cash shop is the same as a typical mobile game. Monthly subscription, Battle Pass, in-game currency packages, daily, weekly, monthly packages and skins tickets. The price will vary between $0.99 to $99.99, although some packages price are a bit weird like the monthly card cost around $3.77. As usual be careful when spending as some packages are not worth.
At the current state of Grimlight, i don’t have a positive view of game making it through this year. They had a terrible launched which made many potential player leave the game without even trying. Having a too simple game play made even more player lose interest quickly and the stamina issue that you face later make the game even worst. Either the company decide to add more content or fix the stamina issue. Else this game will die.
Reading text conversation may help your English a bit. The strategy part of the game may help some beginners to understand different role and position of a unit.
So far I’ve seen they have been adding at least 2 heroes in 1 month and rotate banners every 2 week for summons.
I honestly think it’s a No. Grimlight is a real disappointment for an RPG in 2022. The game is not fun as you will have most the time be waiting for stamina to refill to progress or grind resources to upgrade your characters. I felt like playing an idle game, maybe they would have better chance as an idle game as the game play was way too simple for an RPG. Progression is really slow and you get more and more frustrated as the power of the enemy spike around Chapter 4.
Only way to overcome this difficulty is to farm resources and upgrade your units and equipment but guess what!? You will run out of gold or experience crystal or hammer to make the upgrades. Too bad you can only do 6 runs of one of those dungeon per day as your stamina is so limited. Another annoying issue is that you can’t reset a character, once you invested in a unit your resources are gone forever. Oh No! Chapter 5 have the enemy now is the opposite element.
Which means you will have a really hard time in this chapter unless you can train some units that are strong against that element. Good luck farming resources to level up that unit to the same level as your current team. As you can see, i had a real bad experience with this game but this may be different for you. I think this game is for someone looking for a simple RPG game where you play only around 5 min per day. Thank you for reading till the end, i will see you in the next review.
